Do you run off caffeine and dark humor and your calendar is based on shift schedules- not days of the week? Mary Margaret is a trauma-focused Licensed Professional Counselor who specializes and has dedicated her practice to working with First Responders and their immediate family members. Mary Margaret is innately aware of the nuances of what it means to be a first responder, not only from her clinical specialization but she is a first responder spouse. She received her Master’s in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Equine Assisted Mental Health from Prescott College.

Are you peopled out? Does your work leave you thinking that dogs are better than people? Is your humor a little dark and twisted? Then you’ve stumbled across the right therapist.

    Education:

Bri obtained her License in Clinical Social Work (LCSW) in 2023. Bri obtained her Master’s in Social Work with Clinical Concentration from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2020. She has over 9 years of clinical experience including outpatient settings, case management, skill-building, crisis stabilization, non-profit equine-assisted therapy, and private practice work.

    Approach:

Bri’s treatment approach to therapy tends to be an eclectic and blended style, pulling from various theories to help address your specific needs and concerns. Her style is relational, meaning she shows up in genuine and authentic ways with clients (for example: she cusses in sessions, laughs at jokes, and embraces genuine responses in sessions with her clients). She is trained in basic Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). As a queer clinician, Bri is passionate about providing safe and affirming mental health support for those within the queer community.

Bri strives to create a laid-back therapeutic atmosphere that feels warm and personable. She enjoys going outside with clients, so you will find her wearing athletic-wear and comfortable clothing in sessions. Bri likes to be creative in finding what works best for clients and when appropriate enjoys finding ways to incorporate pop culture into session--cue the Harry Potter, Schitt’s Creek, Taylor Swift, and more references!

    Experience:

Bri works with individual adults who are 18 and older. Bri has been working with first responders and their family members for the past 4.5 years. She works from a trauma informed perspective and has experience helping clients a variety of issues including but not limited to:

    • trauma recovery

    • grief and loss

    • stress management

    • anger management

    • depression

Do you feel as though you can never quite settle down? Does your sarcasm earn you funny looks? Do you seek adrenaline on your days off? Do you like tanks? I might be the counselor for you.

    Education:

Greg obtained a Master’s in Clinical Social Work from VCU and has been working with public safety for three years. He is currently a Supervisee in Social Work and is trained in EMDR.

    Population:

Greg has a passion for working with those in helping professions. He is available for adult (18+) and teen (13-17) clients seeking help with trauma, anxiety, depression, and burnout. He is particularly familiar with the stressors associated with Law Enforcement, Emergency Medicine, and Military. He has first-hand experience with first responder families and growing up in a first responder household.

    Approach:

Greg is motivated to normalize the idea that "it's ok to not be ok". He is adept at allowing space for clients to feel like crap and talk about how they want to navigate their way to a healthier life. He is a certified Peer Support Specialist and an Instructor at REBOOT Recovery. He uses his experiences to bridge the gap between mental health professionals and First Responders, by building trust and providing a place to take off the mask.

The Story of Halfwild

The name “Halfwild” comes from the story of a small horse with a significant trauma history. When Mary Margaret got was introduced to this small, but mighty horse in 2017, the horse was untouchable. She would sprint away at the sight of any human. After many years and lots of work, the horse actively participates in farm life and has developed friendships with many other animals. While the little horse is still half-wild, she will never be a “normal” horse, and that is completely okay. The horse has value in her herd and to her family just the way she is.

This is the approach our team takes to counseling at Halfwild Counseling. There is no set “normal” and everyone brings their own value to life. By combining compassion, persistence, and out-of-the-box thinking, we can all find peace with being who we are.
